GMC heavily reworks Acadia crossover for 2017
GMC unveiled a more-than-redesigned 2017 Acadia on the second day of the Detroit auto show, with the crossover transforming from full-size to midsize to reflect its new proportions and further separate it from the Yukon in the automaker's lineup.
The new Acadia is more than seven inches shorter than the current generation while still offering seven-passenger seating on certain trims, according to GMC.
Its smaller dimensions—the crossover's wheelbase is more than six inches shorter, while its overall height and width are down 3.9 inches and 3.5 inches, respectively—and high-strength steel construction help the Acadia shed roughly 700 lbs. for 2017, now tipping the scales at 3,956 lbs. in front-wheel drive guise compared to 4,656 lbs.
Two new engines choices are offered, including a new, 2.5-litre four-cylinder and an optional 3.6-litre V6.
GMC said the 2.5-litre makes an SAE-certified 194 horsepower and 190 lb.-ft. of torque, while the V6 makes an estimated 310 horsepower and 271 lb.-ft. of torque.
Both of the Acadia's new engines feature direct injection and variable valve timing, according to GMC, and both are mated to six-speed automatic transmissions.
All 2017 Acadia models—front drive is still standard, with all-wheel drive available—feature a new drive mode selector, which allows the chassis and powertrain to be adjusted to cater to a host of driving conditions.
Front-drive models offer Normal, Snow, Sport and Tow modes, while all-wheel drive versions offer two-wheel, four-wheel, Sport, Off-Road and Tow modes.
Also new for 2017 is the new Acadia All Terrain model, which "matches distinctive design elements with enhanced off-road driving ability," GMC said.
"At the heart of the Acadia All Terrain's capability is an advanced all-wheel drive system with Active Twin Clutch, which optimizes traction for every condition it encounters," GMC said in a statement.
"And while it is engineered for optimal performance in wet, snowy and icy conditions, it also provides enhanced stability in dry conditions."
All Terrain models stand out from the rest of the Acadia pack with a body colour grille surround, black chrome trim and unique wheels.
Inside is exclusive five-passenger seating, All Terrain interior accents, and covered storage bins in the rear cargo floor in place of a third-row seat.
Like the first generation, an Acadia Denali will be offered for 2017, this time with exclusive Continuously Variable Ride Control.
The 2017 Acadia is set to go on sale this spring.
