2016 Mazda CX-9 gets price bump over predecessor

Less is more in the case of Mazda's largest crossover, with the 2016 CX-9 burning less fuel than its predecessor on its way to a starting price of $35,300.

That price, which is $1,305 more than the outgoing version, will nab you a front-wheel drive version of the redesigned CX-9, which recently saw its Natural Resources Canada fuel economy rating jump 35 per cent to 10.5 L/100 km city and 8.3 L/100 km highway.

All models come powered by a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine that makes 227 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque, the latter of which is close to 20 per cent more than the previous generation's naturally-aspirated 3.7-litre V6.

"The all-new CX-9 demonstrates Mazda's true capabilities in the intermediate segment, providing more torque where you need it most, while offering amazing real-world fuel economy," David Klan, Mazda Canada's senior director of sales and marketing, said in a statement.

"Add that to the new level of refinement and interior flexibility and you've got a seven-passenger family vehicle that is hard to beat."

Standard features on the base model include 18-inch alloy wheels, auto-levelling LED headlights, LED taillights, power heated mirrors, an electronic parking brake, push-button start, a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a rearview camera, heated front seats, and tri-zone automatic climate control.

All-wheel drive adds $2,500 to the base GS model's MSRP for a total of $37,800, which is only $805 more than the current equivalent.

The GS-L, meanwhile, adds a power glass moonroof, a power liftgate, rain-sensing windshield wipers, leather seating, heated steering wheel, and advanced keyless entry, as well as blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert, all for a price of $41,500.

That price is $1,505 more than the current CX-9 GS-L.

The CX-9 GT gets larger 20-inch alloy wheel, a windshield-projected colour head's up display system, satellite navigation, a 12-speaker BOSE audio system, and aluminum trim throughout the interior.

An available Technology Package adds radar cruise control smart braking, forward obstruction warning, lane departure warning and lane-keep assist.

That model starts at $45,500, while the Technology Package adds $1,600.

Finally, a new signature trim brings premium interior features like Nappa leather seating, rosewood interior trim, and LED interior lighting.

The Signature model is priced as $50,100.

The CX-9 will hit dealerships in June, according to Mazda.
