The 2016 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid has received a combined fuel economy rating of 46 mpg from the U.S. EPA—equivalent to roughly 5.1 L/100 km.

Powered by an all-new direct-injected 1.8-litre four-cylinder gas engine and a two-motor drive unit based on the one found in the 2016 Chevrolet Volt, the Malibu Hybrid received an EPA-estimated city fuel economy rating of 47 mpg, equal to 5 L/100 km, and a highway rating of 46 mpg, about 5.1 L/100 km.

Those numbers put it ahead of fellow midsize sedans in the Ford Fusion Hybrid and Toyota Camry Hybrid in both city and highway ratings, and the smaller Volkswagen Jetta Turbocharged Hybrid in the city.

The Honda Accord Hybrid ranks ahead of it in the city, with an EnerGuide rating of 4.7 L/100 km.

The Malibu Hybrid has a total system output of 182 horsepower and 277 lb.-ft. of torque, the bulk of which comes from its four-cylinder that features the brand's first application of exhaust gas heat recovery technology.

The twin electric motors chip in with an additional 60 horsepower and, more importantly, 148 lb.-ft. of torque.

The car also borrows the Volt's regenerative braking system to put power back into its 1.5-kWh lithium-ion battery pack.
