A Maybach Coupe in our Future

The war between rival German luxury car makes is escalating. It seems as though whenever one brings out a new model, the other is quick to launch an alternative. The examples are endless: X6 vs. GLE Coupe, CLS vs. 6 Series Gran Coupé, and so on and so forth.

Where BMW had an edge was with Rolls-Royce. Mercedes “had” Maybach as a brand but it was short-lived. The recent return of the hyper-luxury make is more of a trim to the S 600 and regardless of how sales went over the last few years.

This time, a Maybach Coupe is being teased as the next big thing from Mercedes. The picture revels very little. For one thing, its profile resembles that of the Maybach Exelero more than a touched-up S-Class Coupe that already exists.

The only detail available is that the car is “almost six metres of ultimate luxury” and that it will be revealed to the world at the Pebble Beach Concours D'Elegance in California later in August.

When we say war between the brands, we mean it. Back in 2005, BMW took over as the top-selling luxury brand. Mercedes-Benz (and Audi) have been hot on their tail and for the first time in over a decade, Merc has outsold BMW in the first half of the calendar year.
