We’re Driving an Anti-SUV this Week, the 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Wagon

A few months ago, during the C-Class Cabriolet launch, Mercedes-Benz gathered up the invited journalists to unveil the new 2017 E-Class Wagon, one of the rare cars still offered in this body style since the SUV tidal wave hit our continent and practically eliminated station wagons.

However, there are still a few wagon enthusiasts out there, and gladly, some manufacturers are still producing these models to satisfy this small group of buyers. One of those manufacturers is Mercedes-Benz who, after introducing a totally redesigned E-Class sedan, is now launching the wagon version of their midsize model. We only get a static presentation during its global unveiling, but now, we’re headed to Germany to get behind the wheel and discover its virtues.

The test will be simple as initially, only one variant will be offered in Canada. The E 400 4MATIC Wagon is equipped with a twin-turbo, 3.0-litre V6 that develops 329 horsepower and 354 lb.-ft. of torque. Fortunately, it will include the brand’s excellent 4MATIC all-wheel drivetrain.

What about the AMG version?

Those into high performance and exclusivity will be sad to learn that unlike the sedan, the Mercedes-AMG E 43 wagon won’t be available on our market. However, all is not lost, as the AMG E 63 has officially obtained its visa for Canada. For many, it’s the best of all worlds—practical, discreet, but capable of leaving many sports cars in the dust.

Don’t miss our coverage of the 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Wagon in a few days.
