A Chevrolet Camaro Bound for Autocross
Not too long ago, a musclecar was only good in a straight line. If you took a corner a little bit too fast, you would end up in the ditch.
Recently however, the Dodge Challenger, Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang became better and better, sometimes even challenging European and Japanese sports cars.
For the 2016 SEMA Show, Chevrolet just showcased the next step by bringing a Camaro optimized for Autocross, an automotive discipline that places handling before anything else.
First of all, this car features a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. It may only make around 275 horsepower, but it’s enough for the tight, technical tracks this car was designed around.
Handling is optimized by a lowered suspension, larger stabilizer bars and a prototype anti-roll bar. Twenty-inch wheels help with cornering, and Chevrolet installed larger brakes. To make sure the engine can breathe, engineers added a performance air intake as well as a less-restrictive exhaust. The manual transmission receives a short-throw shift kit so gear changes can be dispatched as quickly as possible.
The car obviously won’t be sold as is, but Chevrolet will probably sell the individual parts at its dealerships' part counters.
