2017 Subaru Impreza: We’re Driving it This Week

The Car Guide is heading to the Monterey peninsula in California in order to get behind the wheel of the new Subaru Impreza on the roads of that fantastic region.

Developed on an all-new architecture called Global Platform, that will serve as the basis for many other of the brand’s future models, the new Impreza will be 70% stiffer compared to the previous-generation model, according to their engineers who also pointed out that the new platform would better protect the car’s occupants in the case of an impact. As for dimensions, the Impreza sedan is 1.6 inches longer, 1.5 inches wider and 0.4 inch lower than the outgoing model. The five-door model, which has always been a popular choice in Canada, will continue to be offered.

The car’s styling is closely linked to the look of the Impreza Sedan Concept presented last year, although we must admit that the overall appearance is a little less unique and a little more generic. Under the hood, the Impreza relies on a new Boxer four-cylinder engine that develops 152 horsepower with the adoption of direct injection.

This engine is connected to a CVT automatic transmission, or a manual gearbox that only includes five speeds, contrasting with today’s reality where six-speed manuals are now the norm. The full-time all-wheel drive system, on which the brand’s reputation was built, is obviously still offered as standard.
