2018 GMC Terrain: the SUV Battle Rages on

DETROIT, Michigan – After unveiling the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox late last year, it’s its cousin’s turn, the 2018 GMC Terrain, to be presented at the Detroit Auto Show. The Terrain is very important for GM, as more than 700,000 units have been sold since it first hit the market back in 2009. More modern and less angular than the outgoing generation, it nonetheless boasts GMC’s styling cues that were introduced on the Acadia, the brand’s midsize SUV. That includes the signature grille that gives the Terrain a robust look.

Three trim levels will be offered for this new generation, SLE, SLT and upscale Denali. Each one gets its own equipment levels. As for powertrains, the new Terrain will be available with one of three. First is a turbocharged, 1.5-litre four that develops 170 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque. For a sportier drive, a turbo 2.0-litre four is also on offer, which produces 252 hp and 260 lb.-ft. of torque. The latter is clearly the better choice for towing.

Finally, and speaking of towing, a turbo-diesel engine will also be available. With a displacement of 1.6 litres, it develops a modest 137 hp, but compensates with a peak torque rating of 240 lb.-ft. The two gasoline engines will be connected to a nine-speed automatic transmission, while the diesel engine will be mated to a six-speed automatic. While we’re on the subject of gearboxes, GMC’s engineers curiously decided to replace the traditional shift lever with pushbuttons located on the lower portion of the centre stack. A most unusual approach.

The cockpit has also been completely redesigned. It has become a more refined environment, where richer materials catch the eye. Obviously, all the latest connectivity features are included, such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The new 2018 GMC Terrain should be on sale sometime during the summer of 2017.
