2018 Mercedes-Benz GLA: Subtle Changes
At the Detroit Auto Show, Mercedes-Benz presented revised 2018 GLA subcompact SUV. By the way, did you know we no longer say GLA-Class or GLS-Class? The “Class” designation is now reserved for models bearing only one letter, such as the B-Class, the E-Class and the S-Class.
Introduced in 2013, it was time for the GLA to get some improvements—even though they’re pretty subtle. The bumpers have been slightly revised, while new alloy wheel designs and a new paint colour called Canyon Beige have been added. According to the manufacturer’s press documents, the vehicle’s aerodynamics have been enhanced, but Mercedes hasn’t provided any numbers for comparison. The previously optional bi-xenon headlights have been replaced by what the brand calls “High Performance Headlights,” which are standard on the AMG GLA 45 and available in the GLA 250.

Inside, the changes are just as subtle. It’s essentially optional equipment that has now become standard. For example, the eight-inch screen that was previously part of the Multimedia package is now included, as is the rearview camera—at least in the United States.

We need to point something out here. The press release we received concerns the U.S. version of the GLA. Details about option groups and standard features of the Canadian-spec model will be announced this spring or summer, before the 2018 GLA arrives in dealerships across the country. However, we’ll assume what’s offered in Canada won’t differ much than what has been announced in the U.S. version.
No change underhood, though. Both versions get a turbocharged, 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine; in the GLA 250, it develops 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, while the AMG GLA 45’s mill boasts 375 hp and 350 lb.-ft. The dual-clutch automated gearbox still features seven speeds and the drivetrain still powers all four wheels, no matter the version. U.S. customers can order a front-drive GLA, but it’s not available in Canada. If you ask us, it’s not a big deal.
In short, if you’ve always liked the GLA, you’ll still like the 2018 edition. If not, your opinion probably won’t change.
