2018 Range Rover Velar: Fourth Member of the Family

The Car Guide is heading to London to attend the international debut of the new Range Rover Velar, which is set to be unveiled at a special event before its first official public appearance at the Geneva Motor Show next week. The Range Rover Velar will be the fourth member of the Range Rover family, joining the Range Rover Evoque, the Range Rover Sport and the Range Rover.

Why the name Velar? It was the codename given to the first Range Rover prototypes when the automaker was running tests in 1969. The word Velar comes from the Latin velaris, which means to cover or hide. As for the positioning of the new Range Rover, the make says the Velar will fall between the Range Rover Evoque, launched in 2010 at the Paris Motor Show, and the Range Rover Sport, launched in 2005.

With its Range Rover Evoque, Land Rover managed to dramatically increase sales by marketing the compact SUV as chic and stylish, even adding an innovative convertible model to the line-up last year. With the Velar, Land Rover is looking to strengthen its foothold in the SUV arena by pricing the new model lower than the Range Rover Sport as well as the Range Rover, the most prestigious of the lot.

We’ll be bringing you more details on the 2018 Range Rover Velar a little later this week. Stay tuned…
