A convertible sport utility vehicle may seem like a far-fetched idea, but let’s not forget that Jeep sells such a truck since 1941. However, droptop SUVs on our market are very rare, but that didn’t stop English manufacturer Land Rover from recently launching one.

Since last summer, a convertible version of the Range Rover Evoque is available on the Canadian market. This compact SUV is equipped with a power-folding and insulted fabric top that can be raised or lowered even while the vehicle is movement, at speeds of up to 48 km/h.

Top up or down, we must admit that the vehicle’s styling is attractive. In addition, even when the top is lowered, trunk capacity remains the same with a volume of 251 litres. According to the manufacturer, the cargo area can easily accommodate a golf bag or a baby stroller. There’s also a pass-through hatch between the two rear seats for hauling skis or a snowboard.

Compared to the five-door Evoque, the convertible version isn’t less capable. Although it might not be as skilled in off-road driving as other Land Rover products, its all-wheel drive system combined with its Terrain Response electronic control system allows the SUV to confront a multitude de surfaces such as snow, sand and mud. A 250-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine matched to a nine-speed automatic transmission provides great performance and reasonable fuel economy.

The vehicle’s cockpit serves up a long list of features such as leather upholstery, heated and cooled front seats, head-up display, adjustable mood lighting, a powerful Meridian sound system and the brand’s InControl Touch Pro infotainment system with 10.2-inch touchscreen. The Range Rover Evoque Convertible is priced from $65,990 before freight and delivery charges.
