Used Vehicles: A Good Choice for Students

Published on August 14, 2017 in Tests and Features by Sylvain Raymond

Buying a used vehicle is a tough decision for any student. You want a stylish car with low interest premiums that will be affordable across the board and, of course, reliable. You certainly don’t want to spend your entire paycheck on repairs. If this is the situation you’re in, here are a few models that might interest you.

The Honda Civic is a pre-owned mainstay. The asking price is higher than average, but it has good resale value, it’s a pleasure to drive and, most importantly, it has great reliability. To keep your insurance premiums down, stay away from the most powerful version, the Civic Si, and the coupe.

In the same segment, the Mazda3 is also an excellent choice, and it’s one of the most enjoyable cars to drive. However, we recommend that you steer clear of pre-2010 models because of rust issues.

If you have a green streak, the Toyota Prius—the queen of hybrids—is your best bet. It’s known for its reliability and amazing fuel efficiency. It may not be the most exciting car to drive, but it will win you points with environmentally conscious students.

Looking for a small SUV? The Kia Soul could be the vehicle for you if you want something a little different. It has a practical, boxy shape, and the engine gets decent fuel economy. If possible, opt for the second-generation Soul, which came out in 2014.

Do you have a slightly bigger budget and a penchant for sporty cars? The Ford Focus ST has a loyal fanbase. Don’t let appearances fool you—it delivers excellent performance. And between its dynamic style and the revving of its engine, you’re sure to get noticed on the road. The challenge will be finding one that hasn’t been driven too hard!
