The New I.D. CROZZ: A Prelude to Volkswagen’s First Electric SUV

Initially unveiled at Auto Shanghai, the Volkswagen I.D. Crozz concept will be making an appearance at the Frankfurt Motor Show—but this time we’ll be seeing a version that’s much closer to the production model. This 100% electric SUV, the brand’s first, is expected to hit the market in 2020.

The concept vehicle is built on Volkswagen’s all-new Modular Electrification Toolkit (MEB) platform, which the group’s upcoming electric vehicles will be built on. Currently, three other concept models use it, including the e-Bus BUDD-e launched in 2016, the I.D. concept presented at the Paris Motor Show in 2016, and the I.D. Buzz unveiled at the most recent Detroit Motor Show.

Style-wise, a few updates have been made since the first concept came out. The differences are mostly noticeable in the front and rear. The vehicle is equipped with a pair of electric motors: a 75-kW mill powering the front wheels and a 150-kW mill for the rear wheels. They’re claiming that the vehicle will have about 500 kilometres of range, which would be great from a 83-kWh battery.

Volkswagen has ambitious plans for electrifying its lineup and has set a target to sell one million electric vehicles worldwide by 2025.
