We’re Heading to Portugal to Drive the 2018 Volkswagen T-Roc!
This week, we’ll be in Portugal to get behind the wheel of the 2018 Volkswagen T-Roc, the first subcompact crossover from the German carmaker. As we know, this is a segment in full bloom, with offerings such as the Honda HR-V, Toyota C-HR, Mazda CX-3 and Nissan Qashqai. For the moment, Volkswagen has not confirmed plans to sell this thing in Canada and in the United States.
So, why have we been invited to drive it? Because according to Volkswagen Canada, the T-Roc is a preview of things to come for small crossovers here in North America, and that we will get a vehicle largely based on it. Will it be in Portugal that the official announcement will take place? To be continued…

Meanwhile, what we know is that the T-Roc rides on the MQB platform, same as the Golf and the Tiguan, but inherits a shorter wheelbase and lower roofline than its big brother, giving it almost coupe-like proportions. In Europe, the T-Roc comes fitted with either a six-speed manual or a DSG dual-clutch, seven-speed automatic. Should this vehicle make it to our market someday, we wouldn’t be surprised if it was powered by the largest of three available engines, the same 2.0-litre turbo as the Tiguan.
