2019 Ram 1500: All New at Last!

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has unveiled the totally redesigned 2019 Ram 1500 pickup at the Detroit Auto Show, and it’s got a lot to new features to talk about.

First of all, it’s built on a new platform that is said to be stiffer, due to extensive use of high-strength steel, while active tuned mass modules (ATMM) have been installed under the front section of the cabin to reduce vibration. The 1500 also gets a revised suspension and bigger brakes, and the optional four-corner air suspension has been reworked as well.

The new exterior design is familiar, but more sophisticated. Quad Cab and Crew Cab configurations are still offered, as well as 4x2 and 4x4 drivetrains, of course. However, the regular cab version is no more. The Crew Cab has been stretched by 10 centimetres (four inches) to create a more spacious cockpit, which FCA says is the biggest in its class. The centre console and its storage compartment are also more accommodating. Offered for the first time in a pickup truck, the rear seatbacks can be reclined, and those seats feature both heated and ventilation.

Six trim levels will be available at launch, each catering to a somewhat different clientele. The Tradesman is the base version, followed by the Big Horn and the off-road-ready Rebel. The Laramie, Limited and Longhorn grades incrementally add more content and luxury. Depending on the trim level chosen, the trucks appearance can be customised with the Chrome Package, the Monochrome Package, the Sport Package, the Black Package and the Two-tone Package. Wheel sizes range from 18 to 22 inches in diameter.

Two powertrains will be available at launch. The 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 (305 hp, 269 lb.-ft.) and 5.7-litre HEMI V8 (395 hp, 410 lb.-ft.) are back, both managed by an eight-speed automatic transmission. However, an eTorque mild hybrid system will be included with the V6 and available with the V8. It aims to provide some extra torque according to driving conditions, act as a seamless start/stop system and reduce fuel economy—figures have yet to be announced, though. The turbo-diesel, 3.0-litre V6 will take a break for now, but FCA says it will return during the 2019 calendar year.

There are also a slew of new available features, such as a 12-inch Uconnect infotainment system, on-board 4G Wi-Fi hotspot, a panoramic dual-pane sunroof, a 360-degree camera system and SiriusXM 360L with on-demand content, among other things.

The all-new 2019 Ram 1500 will be on sale in the first quarter of 2018.
