Volkswagen I.D. VIZZION Concept: The Family’s Growing!

Anyone remember the I.D. family of electric vehicles Volkswagen presented at the Frankfurt and Los Angeles auto shows? Well, a new member will join that family in Geneva: the I.D. VIZZION concept.

Volkswagen says the VIZZION represents the next step in autonomous and electric technology and gets closer to its vision to electrify 20 vehicles in its lineup by 2025. For the first time in the carmaker’s existence, Volkswagen proposes a fully autonomous and electric sedan.

Inside the VIZZION concept, designers have explored the new realities of a driverless car by completely removing the steering wheel and physical controls. According to Volkswagen, this new technique in building car interiors would not only increase overall vehicle safety, but also allow occupants to better structure their time during the drive… uh, the ride.

The car itself would feature a virtual host who the passengers can interact with using both voice and gestural commands. The VIZZION’s artificial intelligence system adapts and automatically adjusts the vehicles parameters according to the preferences of each occupant sitting inside.

Volkswagen claims the I.D. VIZZION sedan concept will be powered by a 111-kWh lithium-ion battery, which should provide it with 665 km of full electric range, including the energy captured from the regenerative braking system. The vehicle could reach a top speed of 180 km/h, says Volkswagen.

While the Volkswagen I.D. VIZZION concept is still nothing more than a technological lab on wheels, it nevertheless proposes how not-so-far-fetched technology could alter our perception of mobility in the future.
