BMW M8 Gran Coupe Concept: A Promising Future

Published on March 6, 2018 in Geneva by Olivier Beaulieu

For the past year, German brand BMW has been yelling on every rooftop that its 8 Series will return to its lineup. At the last Frankfurt Auto Show, the automaker announced the renaissance of its prodigal son, and in various configurations, too. Here’s what we can expect.

At the moment, we know that the BMW 8 Series will be available in several variants, including the 840i equipped with a 320-horsepower, twin-turbo 3.0-litre six, and the 850i boasting a 445-horsepower, 4.4-litre V8. We’ll also get the M860i xDrive version that’s blessed with a 600-horsepower, 6.6-litre V12. The same engine found in the BMW M760Li xDrive.

As for the Gran Coupe, little details have been confirmed so far by the manufacturer. We know that we’ll be dealing with a muscular, but also luxurious, monster. From a styling standpoint, it will be equipped with a low and sporty front apron. We can also spot come gold coloured lines that will add a touch of distinction to the car. BMW is aiming a more demanding clientele than 7 Series owners are. At the rear of the vehicle, there are some carbon fibre reinforced plastic trimmings along with a gold exhaust system.

The automaker is clearly trying to set itself apart with a very powerful engine, aggressive styling and unrivalled comfort. In other words, it seeks to go head-to-head with the Mercedes-AMG S 65.

BMW says the production version of the M8 Gran Coupe will be presented sometime in 2019, and will appear in showrooms a few months thereafter. As for pricing, we can expect an MSRP of close to $200,000. After all, its sister the M760Li retails for more than $160,000.
