2019 BMW M2 Competition: Even Hotter!

The German automaker has just announced a new version of its mean little M2 coupe, which will go on sale in the summer of 2018.

The M2 Competition should replace the “regular” M2 in the company’s Canadian product lineup, and will benefit from a new, more powerful engine. As a matter of fact, BMW plucked the twin-turbo, 3.0-litre inline-six from under the hoods of the M3 and the M4. Here, it develops 450 horsepower and well as 406 pound-feet of torque from 2350 to 5230 rpm (for BMW fans, it’s the S55 engine). A six-speed manual transmission is still standard, while a dual-clutch, seven-speed automatic is available for those who prefer its quicker gear changes.

With the latter, this new M2 variant can blast from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds, and with the manual gearbox—and an experimented BMW pilot at the wheel—the car needs two tenths of a second for the same sprint. Top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h, but with the optional Driver’s package, it climbs to 280 km/h.

The engine also benefits from a more efficient oil supply system, while its cooling system is taken from the M4 equipped with the Competition package, with a few adjustments. The car is thus ready to hit the track.

The suspension and steering have also been revised, and in its engine compartment, we find the same carbon fibre reinforced plastic strut that is found in the M3 and M4. This component enhances front-end rigidity and steering precision, according to BMW.

If the car is equipped with an automatic transmission, it includes console-mounted switches to modify engine, steering and throttle response reactivity, as if found in various other M products. The driver can set desired preferences and save them for quick access on the steering wheel’s M1 and M2 buttons.

The 2019 BMW M2 Competition also gets new sport seats with integrated headrests and illuminated M2 logos on the seatbacks. The seats’ leather perforations are highlighted with either blue or orange coloration. As for the car’s paint choices, Hockenhein Silver replaces Mineral Grey Metallic and Sunset Orange Metallic is added to the palette.

No word on pricing yet, but the new M2 Competition should cost a little more than the 2018 M2, which currently starts at $65,200 before freight and delivery charges.
