The Car Guide’s 2019 Best Buys: Nissan Micra
Every year, The Car Guide publishes its Best Buys in a slew of vehicle categories, including city cars. They are positioned below the subcompact segment in terms of size and price, but that doesn’t mean we should underestimate them, as city cars allow those of us on a tight budget to get from point A to point B.
The 2019 Best Buy title in the city car segment goes to the Nissan Micra. This little five-door hatchback undoubtedly proves that we don’t need a big engine or all-wheel drive to have some fun behind the wheel. The Micra relies on a 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine and a five-speed manual transmission, while a four-speed automatic is optional.

Up until recently, it was the country’s least expensive car. However, it’s now equipped with a standard sound system that integrates a seven-inch screen, Bluetooth connectivity and a rearview camera. We also like the car’s mechanical simplicity and its reasonable fuel economy. The base Nissan Micra S starts at $10,488 before freight and delivery charges, while the SV and SR versions offer, among other things, air conditioning, cruise control, keyless entry and alloy wheels.
In second place, we find the Chevrolet Spark (MSRP from $9,995) that draws our attention by its bargain price and its comprehensive infotainment system that includes a seven-inch touchscreen, four speakers, Bluetooth connectivity, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration as well as an on-board Wi-Fi hotspot (data package required).
Finally, third place goes to the Mitsubishi Mirage (MSRP from $10,998). It stands out in its segment with its reassuring five-year/100,000 km (which comes first) comprehensive warranty and its 10-year/160,000 powertrain coverage. It’s also available in hatchback and sedan body styles, the latter being an exclusivity in the city car segment.
