Cadillac Introduces a New Sedan: the 2020 CT5

Cadillac isn’t letting go of the sedan market just yet. While the carmaker now focuses its business on SUVs, General Motors’ luxury division is presenting an all-new car before the New York Auto Show. Here’s the 2020 CT5.

Since both the Cadillac CTS and ATS (the latter discontinued in Canada after the 2018 model year) don’t seem to be attracting many BMW, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz buyers, Cadillac tries a new technique with the CT5 by slotting it between a compact and a midsize sedan, all at a more attainable price than its rivals.

It’s a similar strategy as what Acura has done with its TLX.

The CT5 incorporates Cadillac’s new design language which we first saw on the XT4 and XT6 SUVs. Styling details such as an all-new fascia, redesigned taillights and now horizontal headlights help, at least according to Cadillac, to solidify its identity.

Technically, the CT5 will ride on a revised version of the Alpha platform, which also underpins the current Chevrolet Camaro, as well as the Cadillac CTS and ATS. Two engines will be offered, either a 2.0-litre turbocharged four, or a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6. As we’re writing this, Cadillac hasn’t said anything about power and torque, but at the moment, they pump out 237 and 404 horsepower under the hood of other Cadillac models.

Rear-wheel drive will come standard, all-wheel drive optional, but we wouldn’t be surprised if CT5s sold in Canada come with all wheels driven as standard equipment. Nothing was said about available gearboxes.

While Cadillac claimed earlier this year that its future is electric, the 2020 CT5 presents no electrified drivetrain yet.
