Volkswagen Teases the ID. ROOMZZ, its Biggest Electric Concept to Date
When Auto Shanghai kicks off on April 16, Volkswagen will unveil yet another member of its ID. family of electric vehicle concepts. The all-new ID. ROOMZZ will also be its biggest one to date.
Just like the compact I.D., the I.D. CROZZ, the I.D. BUZZ, the I.D. VIZZION and the ID. BUGGY before it, the ID. ROOMZZ is based on the German automaker’s modular electric drive platform known as MEB. It’s being described as a “multi-variable all-round model,” which is a strange way of referring to a large and spacious SUV.

As the name suggests, the ID. ROOMZZ will be all about interior room and versatility. Volkswagen is promising completely new seat configurations (which we’re curious to see), as well as high-quality materials and customizable light. The exterior, meanwhile, appears to be similar to the smaller I.D. CROZZ, but possibly with a more traditional and upright rear hatch (a requisite when you want to maximize cargo space).
On the road, the IQ.DRIVE systems will allow the vehicle to be operated autonomously without an active driver in ID. Pilot mode (level 4 autonomy). Driving range is unspecified at this point, however.
“The ID. ROOMZZ shows us what we can expect from full-size electric SUVs in the future,” said Klaus Bischoff, Chief Designer at the Volkswagen brand. “The puristic look emphasizes the clear function and the user experience is intuitive and natural.”
Volkswagen has only released teaser images so far, but we know that the production version of the ID. ROOMZZ concept will hit the Chinese market first in 2021. Given the huge popularity of SUVs and crossovers in North America, you can expect it to land on our roads as well.
