First Look at the Redesigned 2020 Buick Encore

Published on April 16, 2019 in Shanghai by Guillaume Rivard

Buick enjoys a lot more success in China than it does over here, so naturally the company used Auto Shanghai 2019 to unveil a number of new models. The one we’re more interested in is the Encore subcompact crossover, which is by far the brand’s best-selling vehicle in Canada.

Actually, Buick presented two similarly styled variants in China. First, the regular Encore is about the same size as the current generation, but built on an updated version of GM’s Gamma II platform called GEM (Global Emerging Markets).

Then there’s the longer-wheelbase Encore GX, which is the one we should receive in North America according to multiple reports (though probably without the “GX” moniker). It rides on the automaker’s new VSS-F platform, just like the 2020 Chevrolet Trailblazer that was also unveiled in Shanghai as a replacement for the Encore’s cousin, the Chevrolet Trax.

Powertrain options and other technical details have yet to be specified, though it’s expected that the turbocharged 1.4-litre Ecotec engine will return, possibly with a nine-speed automatic transmission instead of the six-speed unit.

As for styling, which is inspired by the Buick Enspire concept from last year, we’re pleased to see a dramatic evolution in the vehicle’s silhouette, from the chrome strip adorning the wider front grille to the sloping roofline and the muscular rear fenders. It looks way more dynamic and sportier than the outgoing Encore, that’s for sure.

Look for the North American-bound 2020 Buick Encore to make its first appearance later this year. We’ll find out everything there is to know at that time.
