Four-cylinder Toyota Supra Receives Certification
Have you already made plans to buy a copy of the all-new 2020 Toyota Supra when it goes on sale in Canada this summer? Maybe your initial excitement was dampened by the fact it carries a base MSRP of $64,990, which is pretty expensive for any Toyota, even one that promises unprecedented performance and thrills.
As the Japanese company’s halo sports car, the Supra stands head and shoulders above the entry-level 86 thanks in large part to a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six engine borrowed from the BMW Z4. In the Toyota, that mill produces 335 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque—impressive numbers that will take you from 0-100 km/h in just over four seconds.

But what if the Supra offered another engine option, namely a turbocharged four-cylinder? Wouldn’t that be great—and cheaper—too?
While Toyota has yet to make an official announcement, Automobile magazine has discovered that the California Air Resources Board has also certified a four-cylinder version of the Supra for 2020. This means we could see it in Canada sooner rather than later.
The engine listed is a 2.0-litre unit mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, just like the base version of the German roadster. Producing 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque that peaks between 1,550 and 4,400 rpm, the BMW Z4 sDrive30i allows 0-100 km/h sprints in 5.4 seconds.
Would a four-cylinder Toyota Supra be less powerful? That remains to be seen. After all, the six-cylinder model uses a detuned version of the Z4’s 382-horsepower engine.
As for pricing, the Supra is roughly $11,000 less expensive than the Z4 M40i, but the gap would likely be smaller when comparing four-cylinder models. A good bet would be somewhere in the mid-$50K range.
Could this change your decision regarding the Supra?
