Major Android Auto Redesign Coming This Summer

Just how important is Android Auto when it comes to buying a new car or truck? We know for a fact that many customers base their decision on connectivity features and technologies like the infotainment system. And a lot of them prefer to use Google’s interface than the ones offered by automakers.

Things are about to get even better as the tech giant has announced a complete redesign and update of Android Auto that will roll out starting this summer and be available for all compatible vehicles.

The popular platform has had pretty much the same basic design since it debuted a few years ago.

The biggest difference has to do with navigation. From now on, the bottom bar will change based on context, with a “home” button along the left side of the display that brings you to a new launcher for all of your Android Auto apps.

Users will be able to swap out the media controls in the new bottom bar for navigation information if you’ve switched to a media app. An Assistant microphone and a new notifications button appear along the right side of the bar.

“With the new navigation bar, you’ll be able to see your turn-by-turn directions and control your apps and phone on the same screen,” Google says. “You’ll be able to easily control your apps with one tap. Get turn-by-turn directions, rewind your podcast or take incoming call all on the same screen.

Meanwhile, the home screen is replaced by a new notification centre for both text messages and phone calls, complete with a scrollable list that shows cards for your missed calls and messages, plus a few buttons for actions.

People driving at night will also appreciate the new, permanent dark theme of Android Auto that makes it easier on the eyes. This combines with colourful accents and easier to read fonts.

Google adds that if you have a car with a wider screen, Android Auto will now maximize your display to show you more information, like next-turn directions, playback controls and ongoing calls.

And if you love music, you’ll be happy to learn that media will autoplay from where you left off. According to Google, as soon as you start your car, Android Auto will continue playing your media and show your navigation app of choice.
