2020 BMW X1 Announced with Updated Styling and More

Published on May 29, 2019 in New Models by Guillaume Rivard

The BMW X1 is the brand’s best-selling SUV/CUV worldwide and the third most popular in Canada. However, despite a slight increase in sales so far in 2019, it is beginning to show signs of age.

For 2020, that will change as the X1 receives updated exterior styling to reflect the design details found in its newer, larger siblings, such as the X3, X5 and X7. New LED headlights with hexagonal iconography are complemented by new LED fog lights. The kidney grille features a new, sculptured design with larger openings, while the front and rear bumpers sport sharper lines and larger intakes. The rear section also boasts new tinted LED taillights with L-shaped light bars and 20-millimetre larger tailpipes.

Both the standard 18-inch wheels and available 19-inch wheels feature a new design. The optional M Sport Package has been updated for a more aggressive look, as well. Furthermore, three new metallic paint options have been added: Storm Bay metallic, Jucaro Beige and Misano Blue metallic. The signature Estoril Blue will no longer be available.

A Welcoming Interior

After being greeted by a new two-tone LED “X1” welcome projection system, you will find a new 8.8-inch central control display with iDrive 6, navigation and Apple CarPlay compatibility. Still no Android Auto, unfortunately.

The instrument panel and floor mats feature new, decorative contrast stitching. If you select the optional Dakota leather interior, colour-matched lower dashboard and door inserts will be added.

Same Engine, Revised Transmission

Available in front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions, the 2020 BMW X1 is powered by the familiar turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 228 horsepower from 5,000-6,000 rpm and 258 pound-feet of torque from 1,450-4,500 rpm. Acceleration from 0-100 km/h takes about 6.5 seconds.

What’s important to remember here is that the eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission gets revised gear ratios for smoother performance. Once again, the M Sport Package adds steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

The 2020 BMW X1 will enter production in July and is expected to go on sale in Canada by the end of 2019. So far, no prices have been announced, but these updates should help the X1 soldier on until the next generation hits the market a couple of years from now.
