Ford F-150’s 3.0L Diesel to be Available in More Models

The Ford F-150 remains the best-selling vehicle in Canada in large part thanks to a plethora of available configurations and powertrains, one of which is the new 3.0-litre Power Stroke turbo-diesel engine.

Good news if you plan to buy one: Instead of being limited to Lariat, King Ranch and Platinum models, this diesel can now be specified with the more affordable XLT starting at $36,299 (regular cab, 6.5-foot cargo bed).

The company says it listened to dealers and customers across the country, who demanded expanded availability for the fuel-efficient mill.

Let’s put the numbers out again, shall we? The 3.0-litre Power Stroke turbo-diesel engine produces 250 horsepower at 3,250 rpm and 440 pound-feet of torque at 1,750 rpm, giving the Ford F-150 a maximum towing capacity of 11,400 pounds (5,170 kilos) when properly equipped.

Mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission, it achieves 10.8 L/100 km in the city, 8.0 L/100 km on the highway and 9.5 L/100 km combined in the case of the two-wheel-drive F-150.

The alternatives include a naturally aspirated 3.3-litre V6 (290 horsepower), turbocharged 2.7-litre and 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6s (325 and 375 horsepower, respectively) and a 5.0-litre V8 (395 horsepower). Let’s not forget the high-output EcoBoost in the F-150 Limited and Raptor, which delivers 450 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque.

Oh, and there’s a Ford F-150 Plug-in Hybrid coming for 2020. Plus, the automaker has been caught testing a zero-emission F-150 Electric prototype recently.
