2020 Lexus GX Becomes Safer and Better Off the Road

Three-row SUVs are very popular these days, yet the midsize Lexus GX remains in the shadow of most competitors. Toyota’s luxury brand is making some updates for 2020 to help it draw more attention.

Physically, the spindle grille gets a bold, kaleidoscopic treatment that is equal parts fashion statement and optical illusion. It is flanked by new standard premium triple-beam LED headlights.

Designed to accommodate up to seven passengers, the interior of the Lexus GX now features an elegant Gray Sapele Wood with Aluminum trim. Rear-seat occupants can power their mobile devices thanks to two additional USB ports, bringing the GX’s total to four.

Improved On and Off the Road

In order to provide extra protection and peace of mind, the Lexus Safety System+ is now standard on all 2020 Lexus vehicles, including the GX. The most notable technologies are a Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert, Automatic High Beams and High-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.

When venturing off the road, the updated GX will rely on several new technologies. With five modes to choose from, the available Multi-terrain Select system regulates wheel spin by automatically adjusting the engine throttle and brakes. Meanwhile, the Multi-terrain Monitor and Panoramic View Monitors give first-row passengers front, rear and side camera views on the navigation screen.

There’s also an available Crawl Control system designed to automatically maintain an optimal slow and steady pace over sketchy terrains and inclines. It works with five low-speed settings and even in reverse.

Under the hood, the same 4.6-litre V8 engine returns with 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque, allowing the vehicle to tow up to 6,500 pounds. Incidentally, towing is aided with Trailer Sway Control.

The 2020 Lexus GX will arrive at Canadian dealers shortly. The base price has not been announced yet, but it should be close to the outgoing model which starts at $74,400.
