Here’s How Much the Mazda CX-5 Diesel Will Cost You

Back in April at the New York Auto Show, we learned that the long-awaited diesel version of the Mazda CX-5 would go on sale in late summer. What the company failed to mention at that time was how much the vehicle would cost.

We now have the answer.

The 2019 Mazda CX-5 Signature equipped with a 2.2-litre SKYACTIV-D engine will hit the market next month starting at $45,950 plus freight and delivery charges. And for the first time, Mazda Canada will include complimentary scheduled maintenance for two years or 32,000 kilometres.

As previously reported, the diesel engine will be available exclusively in the highest trim level, so if you were hoping to combine the fuel economy of the CX-5 Diesel with an affordable purchase price, that won’t be possible. At least, initially. The folks at Mazda Canada might change their minds for the next model year, though it appears unlikely they will.

What do you get exactly for such a hefty sum? The SKYACTIV-D uses a sequential twin turbocharger to deliver 168 horsepower at 4,000 rpm and 290 pound-feet of torque at 2,000 rpm. Paired with Mazda’s i-ACTIV all-wheel drive system and a six-speed automatic transmission, it achieves a combined city-highway fuel economy rating of 8.5 L/100 km.

While the diesel engine is more efficient than the turbocharged 2.5-litre gasoline unit (9.8 L/100 km), it is not quite as strong (up to 250 horsepower and 310 pound-feet).

As for the rest of the vehicle, the Signature trim means a luxurious interior with Cocoa Nappa leather, genuine Abachi wood and satin chrome accents, a leather-wrapped steering wheel featuring unique stitching, ambient LED lighting, ventilated front seats and head-up display.

If you’d like to spend less money on a compact SUV with a diesel engine, you can still turn to the Chevrolet Equinox (starting at $35,500) and GMC Terrain ($37,100). But hurry: GM recently announced that it will stop offering the 1.6-litre turbo-diesel option with these two models for 2020.
