2020 Toyota Camry Goes Darker, Sportier and More Connected

Published on September 20, 2019 in News by Guillaume Rivard

The 2020 Toyota Camry is now on sale across Canada with two new limited-production editions and upgraded connectivity that should help this best-selling midsize sedan increase its lead.

Most notably, the V6-powered Camry TRD is a sportier version of the SE and XSE. Priced at $35,990, it benefits from exclusive chassis enhancements and tuning courtesy of the automaker’s performance division, which we all know for its work on Toyota pickups and SUVs.

Thicker underbody braces increase torsional rigidity, while stiffer coil springs lower the car by 15 mm for a reduced centre of gravity. New sway bars increase roll stiffness by 44 percent in the front and 67 percent in the rear.

Larger disc brakes featuring Active Cornering Assist, specially calibrated dampers, 19-inch matte black alloy wheels and Bridgestone Potenza summer tires complete the technical package.

Calty, Toyota’s North American design studio, took care of styling and especially aerodynamics with a front splitter, side skirts, trunk lid spoiler and rear diffuser. Exclusive LED headlights and a gloss black front grille with a sport mesh insert are other highlights of the Camry TRD. Let’s not forget the TRD-tuned, cat-back dual exhaust system with polished stainless steel tips. You can bet this version sounds a lot better than the regular Camry!

Inside, you’ll find black SofTex-trimmed sport seats with fabric inserts, red accents and red-stitched TRD embroidered headrests, as well as red seatbelts, a shift knob with an embossed TRD logo, unique TRD floor and trunk mats, plus a TRD instrument cluster display.

Another new model joining the Camry lineup for 2020 is the Nightshade Edition starting at $30,400. Hot on the heels of the Corolla Nightshade, this one boasts unique 18-inch black alloy wheels, black door handles and mirror caps, black badging, a black shark-fin antenna, a black rear spoiler and gloss black window trim.

Also notable is the fact that every model is now factory-fitted with Connected Services by Toyota with a seven- or eight-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

There are no changes under the hood, as expected. The base 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine still produces 203 horsepower, while the 3.5-litre V6 delivers 301 horsepower. Both are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Meanwhile, the Camry Hybrid combines the same 2.5-litre four-cylinder with an electric motor for a net rating of 208 horsepower. It’s paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission featuring a sequential shift mode.

Pricing for the 2020 Toyota Camry starts at $26,620 and climbs all the way to $41,590 in XLE V6 trim. As for the Camry Hybrid, you have to spend at least $31,550.
