2020 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport to be Unveiled This Week

The Car Guide is heading to Chattanooga, Tennessee for the unveiling of Volkswagen’s new midsize SUV.

The Atlas Cross Sport is the five-passenger version of the Atlas, which can seat six or seven people. Remember, the Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport Concept was revealed at the 2018 New York Auto Show, alongside the Atlas Tanoak Pickup Truck Concept. The Cross Sport will be slightly smaller, or actually shorter, but will ride on the same wheelbase as the current Volkswagen Atlas. To give you an idea of the brand’s strategy, the Cross Sport should rival the five-passenger Honda Passport, which is based on the three-row Honda Pilot.

During the presentation of the concept, the automaker announced that it was equipped with a plug-in hybrid powertrain consisting of two electric motors and a 3.6-litre V6, good for a combined output of 355 horsepower. A 310-horsepower, mild hybrid powertrain was also mentioned. All this is hypothetical, of course, and we’ll know more during the production SUV’s official unveil.

The Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport will become the third SUV in the manufacturer’s Canadian and U.S. lineups, and will be assembled at the Chattanooga plant, on the same line as the Atlas. Stay tuned for all the details.
