Porsche is Exploring Flying Cars with Boeing

If you think Porsche’s sports cars can fly on a track, you have seen nothing yet.

The company has just signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Boeing to explore the premium urban air mobility market by leveraging their unique strengths and expertise.

In case it’s not clear enough: They want to build flying cars together.

“Porsche is looking to enhance its scope as a sports car manufacturer by becoming a leading brand for premium mobility. In the longer term, this could mean moving into the third dimension of travel,” said Detlev von Platen, Member of the Executive Board for Sales and Marketing at Porsche AG.

First, Porsche and Boeing will create an international team to address various aspects of urban air mobility, including analysis of the market potential for premium vehicles and possible use cases.

They’re already planning a concept for a fully electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicle. Engineers from both companies, as well as Porsche subsidiaries Porsche Engineering Services GmbH and Studio F.A. Porsche, will implement and test a prototype.

Of course, don’t expect to see an actual Porsche flying car in the short or medium term, not only because this type of thing takes years to develop, but also because governments first need to set standards and regulations for air traffic in cities.

However, the German automaker is giving a lot of weight to its 2018 study that predicted the urban air mobility market will pick up speed after 2025. People will be able to travel through the air more quickly and efficiently than with current means of terrestrial transportation, at a lower cost and with greater flexibility, Porsche claims.
