2020 Mazda CX-5 to Receive More Torque, Extra Features

Published on November 13, 2019 in News by Guillaume Rivard

On the heels of the refreshed CX-9, Mazda is announcing similar changes to its most popular vehicle, the CX-5.

This comes a year after the addition of a top-line Signature model powered by a new turbocharged 2.5-litre engine, and just a couple of months after the equally new 2.2-litre diesel finally hit the market.

The engineers of the 2020 Mazda CX-5 slightly bumped the torque rating of the turbo engine from 310 to 320 pound-feet when using 93-octane premium gasoline. Output remains at 250 horsepower (or 227 when using regular gas).

They also improved the noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) of the CX-5 to further reduce road noise. On the other hand, the engine sound is now artificially enhanced.

Another all-new feature on the 2020 CX-5 is off-road traction assist, which replaces the traction control button and can potentially help the driver when adventuring on uneven terrain. When the diagonal wheels lose traction, off-road traction assist will stop reducing the engine torque and increase the brake force on the wheels without traction. This transfers power to the wheels still on the ground to help allow the vehicle to regain traction and continue the drive.

Furthermore, Mazda is now offering the full suite of i-Activsense safety features as standard equipment, plus automatic on/off headlights and rain-sensing windshield wipers.

Inside, the standard seven-inch touchscreen receives a new Cylinder Deactivation System display, which will help show the fuel efficiency of the naturally aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine. The latter still delivers 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque.

The changes continue with a new key fob design that opens the doors using a remote keyless entry system. New paddle shifters can be found in GT trim.

Full details and Canadian pricing for the 2020 Mazda CX-5 will be announced soon, so we will update this page accordingly.
