Refreshed 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Looks Cooler, Feels Techier

After showing a teaser just before the holiday season, Volkswagen unveiled the refreshed 2021 Atlas at the Chicago Auto Show.

The most obvious changes can be seen in the exterior design. The German automaker’s seven-passenger midsize SUV follows in the footsteps of the five-passenger Atlas Cross Sport introduced last year with redesigned bumpers, headlights and taillights, plus a new three-bar grille. It’s also a bit longer—though not necessarily roomier—than the outgoing Atlas.

The available R-Line package once again adds style in the form of a sportier-looking front fascia, side skirts, unique 20- or 21-inch alloy wheels and R-Line badges.

Meanwhile, the interior of the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas features a new steering wheel, available contrast stitching on leather surfaces and the next generation of the Car-Net telematics system, which includes an updated mobile app, a long list of no-charge services for five years and a variety of subscription options. There’s a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot allowing passengers to access the internet with up to four connected devices simultaneously.

Furthermore, the Atlas is available with the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit, Fender premium audio system, ambient lighting, three-zone climate control, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, wireless charging and remote start.

Nothing changes under the hood. The 235-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder and 276-horsepower V6 both return along with an eight-speed automatic transmission. As previously reported, the base engine is now paired with 4Motion all-wheel drive as standard. The V6 can tow up to 5,000 pounds.

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas will go on sale in Canada by the end of spring. Expect a slight increase in pricing over the current model (MSRP from $36,740).
