The Car Guide’s 2020 Best Buys: Tesla Model 3

Published on March 13, 2020 in News by Guillaume Rivard

Every year, The Car Guide publishes its Best Buys in nearly 30 different vehicle categories. Today we continue our review of the 2020 winners with a look at electric vehicles, a market segment on the rise thanks to the launch of attractive new models with increased range.

While the Nissan LEAF won our inaugural award last year, the Tesla Model 3 is the top pick for 2020.

Forget the secret new entry-level configuration with a software-locked range of 150 kilometres and a base price of $44,999 (it is nowhere to be found on Tesla’s online configurator; you will have to call or visit a Tesla store to order one). The Model 3 is much more interesting in every other trim as it can travel anywhere between 402-518 kilometres with a fully charged battery. Handling is sharp and the interior is a technophile haven with that giant 15-inch display.

The Model 3 Performance makes the biggest statement of all with 0-100 km/h acceleration in 3.4 seconds and a Performance Upgrade kit that includes a lowered suspension, performance brakes and even a Track mode. Fun times are guaranteed!

In second place, the Kia Soul EV (MSRP from $42,595) combines all the great attributes of the third-generation Soul—including a sharp new look—with upgraded 39.2-kWh and 64-kWh batteries offering a range of 248 and 383 kilometres, respectively. It has plenty of power (201 hp, 291 lb-ft. of torque), a pleasant drive and a surprisingly roomy cabin.

Finally, third place in this segment is occupied by another vehicle from the same brand, namely the Kia Niro EV (MSRP from $44,995). The star of a trio that also includes the Niro (hybrid) and Niro PHEV (plug-in hybrid), this model features the same zippy powertrain as the Soul EV and the same batteries, too. We like the excellent build quality, fit and finish, plus the spacious and versatile interior.

The Car Guide’s 2020 Scores

  1. Tesla Model 3 – 86%
  2. Kia Soul EV – 85%
  3. Kia Niro EV – 84%
