Published on April 3, 2020 in News by Guillaume Rivard

Every year, The Car Guide publishes its Best Buys in nearly 30 different vehicle categories. Today we continue our review of the 2020 winners with a look at compact SUVs, a market segment where the leader is also the best-selling model in Canada.

Allow us to present you the Toyota RAV4 (MSRP from $28,090), which is available in many interesting configurations and trim levels. Some utilize a potent four-cylinder engine rated at 203 horsepower, others get a proven hybrid powertrain that’s even better with 219 horsepower and an average fuel consumption of just 6 L/100 km.

For those who want to explore the world, there’s the RAV4 Trail and the RAV4 TRD Off-Road. Beyond their rugged looks, these two models stand out with a new AWD system featuring dynamic torque vectoring and available multi-terrain selector. The latter adds a unique suspension system tailored for off-road driving.

Overall, the RAV4 is a top choice for buyers with tremendous reliability and high residual value. Let’s not forget the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 suite of advanced driver assistance features and the Entune 3.0 multimedia system with Apple CarPlay compatibility.

In second place among compact SUVs this year is the Subaru Forester (MSRP from $28,695), the dependable adventurer that benefits from a renowned AWD system as standard. For 2020, all trim levels receive the EyeSight advanced safety system. Solidly built, roomy and versatile, the Forester also boasts a 182-horsepower engine and great fuel economy.

Last year’s Best Buy, the Mazda CX-5 (MSRP from $27,950), lands in third place this time. We love the sleek exterior, the refined interior, the remarkable driving dynamics and the efficient powertrain. The classy Signature model at the top of the lineup and the available turbo engine rated at 227 horsepower (250 with premium gasoline) are other key assets of the CX-5.
