The winners of the 2020 World Car of the Year Awards, which were supposed to be crowned at the New York Auto Show, were announced via a press release today.

As you know, the event has been postponed until late August and the site now serves as a makeshift hospital for COVID-19 patients.

The most prestigious distinction, 2020 World Car of the Year, went to the Kia Telluride, an all-new seven-passenger SUV with a focus on styling and affordable luxury.

The Mazda3, which was another finalist along with the Mazda CX-30, won the 2020 World Car Design of the Year Award. This Japanese hatchback is a close copy of the stunning Kai Concept introduced at the 2017 Tokyo Auto Show.

Incidentally, Mazda recently secured two Red Dot Design Awards for the CX-30 and MX-30. The brand also took home the 2018 Concept Car of the Year with the Mazda Vision Coupe.

In the 2020 World Performance Car of the Year category, the all-electric Porsche Taycan received the honour. It beat two other Porsche models, namely the 718 Spyder/Cayman GT4 and 911 Carrera, and was even named 2020 World Luxury Car of the Year.

As for the 2020 World Urban Car of the Year, the award goes to the battery-powered Kia Soul EV, which received the most votes from the jury.

Speaking of which, the jury for the World Car of The Year Awards is made up of 86 auto journalists from many different countries including Australia, Austria, Brazil, China, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, India, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Mexico, Poland, Russia, Slovenia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, the United Arab Emirates and the United States.

Canada is represented by yours truly in addition to Mark Richardson (The Globe and Mail) and Sami Haj-Assad (Autoguide.com).
