2020 Honda Civic vs. 2020 Toyota Corolla: The Numbers

Published on May 11, 2020 in Comparative Tests by Frédéric Mercier

The two most popular compact cars in Canada, the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla, have been battling each other like crazy for decades. Over their many generations, they have evolved to better meet the needs of drivers and their families, adding new body styles, models and options in the process.

To help you decide between the two, we’ve compared the numbers and specs for the 2020 editions. Here’s what we found…

Space: Civic

If you need cargo room, chances are you’ll want a hatchback. Luckily, both cars have one in their respective lineup.

The Honda Civic is the clear winner here with a trunk that can fit 728 litres versus just 504 litres in the case of the Toyota Corolla. It also offers better legroom for front and rear passengers.

Safety: Tie

For 2020, both the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla received a “Top Safety Pick” rating from the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

In addition to performing well in various collision tests, they are available with a long list of advanced safety and driver assistance features.

Power: Civic

Performance enthusiasts are beautifully served by Honda. With the sporty Si and Type R variants, the Civic is much better and more attractive than the Corolla. The wicked, 306-horsepower Type R is not just a pocket rocket but a track-devouring monster, too.

Even in base trim, the Civic has the edge over its domestic rival—158 horsepower versus 139.

Fuel Economy: Corolla

The Toyota Corolla is now available with a hybrid powertrain that makes it much more efficient than the Honda Civic. Rated at a combined 4.5 L/100 km, the Toyota Corolla Hybrid is the obvious answer if you want to spend the least amount of money at the pump.

The gas-only Corolla is thriftier, too, with a 2.0-litre engine that burns just 6.7 L/100 km on average versus 7.1 L/100 km for the Civic.

Emissions: Corolla

The addition of the Corolla Hybrid helps Toyota’s compact sedan stand out when it comes to emissions. With a mere 106 g/km of CO₂, it boasts the small carbon footprint environmentalists like.

Once again, though, even the 2.0-litre Corolla is cleaner than the Civic, emitting 158 g/km of CO₂ compared to 164 g/km.

Price: Tie

The two cars have nearly identical price ranges and financing rates, so we can’t declare a winner. Just stay on the lookout for special offers and promotions from dealers.
