Confirmed: Ford Mustang Mach 1 is Back for 2021!

Terrific news for fans of the Ford Mustang (aren’t we all?): The return of the legendary Mach 1, which had become the topic of many rumours since last fall, is now officially confirmed for the 2021 model year.

It will be a special edition replacing the outgoing Bullitt, one step above the Mustang GT.

“Mach 1 has a special place in Mustang history, and it’s time for this special edition to claim the top spot in our 5.0-liter V8 performance lineup and reward our most hardcore Mustang enthusiasts who demand that next level of power, precision and collectability,” said Dave Pericak, director, Ford Icons. “Like the original, the all-new Mustang Mach 1 will be true to its heritage, delivering great looks and as the most track-capable 5.0-liter Mustang ever.”

The Mustang Mach 1 initially made its debut for the 1969 model year as a quicker and better-handling variant of the Mustang GT. It was also more affordable than the Mustang Boss and Shelby.

Production ended after the 1978 model year, although Ford brought it back for 2003-2004 as a swan song for the fourth-generation Mustang.

While the automaker has confirmed a second comeback for 2021, it provided no technical details or exact reveal date (apparently in June). All we have for now are these three pictures of a camouflaged model being tested on the track.

With the Bullitt rated at 480 horsepower, it’s reasonable to expect something close to that magical number of 500.
