Mazda2 Confirmed for All of North America

A while ago, there was quite a fuss raised on the internet when Mazda released a little (and little-known) vehicle known as the Demio. Based upon the well-received Ford Fiesta, many considered it the perfect time for Mazda to unveil a new small car for a North American market struggling with astronomical gas prices. However, when questioned about the possibility of bringing the Demio in as an appropriately named Mazda2, Mazda North America was pessimistic.

And apparently lying.

According to Mazda North America president Jim O’Sullivan, the Mazda2 has been cleared for a North American launch around the end of 2010. Previously remarking that the Canadian market, (which is historically more amorous of the small car market than the U.S.) would be more likely to receive the Mazda2, the announcement comes as good news for our cousins to the south.

No details have yet been released about what engines and options will be available in the North American-spec Mazda2, but O’Sullivan did say that critics and the public alike can look forward to a full reveal in later this year at the Los Angeles auto show.
