The Car Guide’s 2020 Best Buys: BMW 5 Series
Every year, The Car Guide publishes its Best Buys in nearly 30 different vehicle categories. Today we continue our review of the 2020 winners with a look at midsize luxury cars.
There is no change to the ranking set in 2019, which means the BMW 5 Series (MSRP from $64,050) gets the nod for the second year in a row.

The Bavarian sedan offers a wide selection of powertrains, finishes and equipment for all tastes, whether you prefer a sporty character or a more luxurious ride. For instance, the 530e xDrive plug-in hybrid model relies on 248 combined horsepower and an EV-only driving range estimated at 34 km. The M550i xDrive serves up hot-blooded performance with its 523-hp V8 engine, but the raging M5 and M5 Competition are even faster with 600 and 617 hp, respectively. All-wheel drive comes standard on all of them.
Outstanding driving dynamics separate the BMW 5 Series from the competition. There’s also a very user-friendly iDrive infotainment system, a full suite of advanced safety and driver assistance features, plus a supportive and ergonomic cockpit. Last but not least, reliability has improved substantially in recent years.
In second place stand the Audi A6 and A7 (MSRP from $62,400 and $78,700, respectively). We continue to love their sumptuous cockpit and sharp design. For 2020, the new generation adds several models including the A6 allroad, S6/S7, RS 6 Avant and RS 7 Sportback. The last two boast a twin-turbo V8 engine rated at 590 horsepower.
Finally, the Volvo S90 (MSRP from $67,000) takes third place with its lovely exterior design, opulent cabin and powerful turbo four-cylinder engine. World-class safety and a plug-in hybrid variant with 34 km of EV range make it hard to ignore, as well.
