2021 Hyundai Veloster N Returns, Base Veloster Models Axed in Canada

Published on August 5, 2020 in News by Guillaume Rivard

The Hyundai Veloster N is exceeding expectations since coming to market two years ago. For 2020, the company had to import 89 percent more units in Canada to meet demand.

On the other hand, the base Veloster (147 hp) and Veloster Turbo (201 hp) are not as interesting, so they won’t return to the lineup for 2021. The 275-hp Veloster N will carry on all alone.

Hyundai’s hot hatch still relies on a standard six-speed manual gearbox, but now customers will be able to order an eight-speed N dual-clutch transmission with paddle shifters. Unlike dry-type units, this one uses oil to significantly improve lubrication and cooling performance, as required of higher-torque applications (260 lb-ft in this case).

Furthermore, an N Grin Shift function increases peak torque by seven percent (to 278 lb-ft) for up to 20 seconds by allowing temporary turbocharger over-boost and maximizing transmission response. This is great for passing, obviously. Transmission customization settings are now available in the “Custom” screen mode.

In the best scenario, the 2021 Hyundai Veloster N sprints from 0-96 km/h in 5.6 seconds.

Meanwhile, the interior gets new, race-inspired N Light sport seats that are lighter and thinner yet more supportive. Wrapped in cloth and leatherette, these buckets have an illuminated “N” logo on the upper side of the backrest.

Other changes include a new eight-inch display audio/navigation system and many new driver assistance features such as Forward Collision-avoidance Assist, Lane Following Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Driver Attention Warning, Blind Spot Collision-Avoidance Warning and Rear Cross-traffic Collision Warning.

The 2021 Hyundai Veloster N will arrive at Canadian dealers in October. Pricing has yet to be announced. For the record, the 2020 model starts at $35,049.
