2022 Volkswagen Golf R to Debut Soon and We Can’t Wait!

The eighth-generation Volkswagen Golf is not coming to Canada in base trim and this is sad news for a lot of people. The silver lining, at least for performance enthusiasts, is the return of the Golf GTI and Golf R.

The former was unveiled virtually last winter, while the latter will make its debut pretty soon. When exactly? Well, you can circle November 4 on your calendar.

A mini-teaser was shared yesterday by race car driver Tanner Foust via his Twitter account. While the clip focuses on the T-Roc R, we can see a darkened image of the upcoming Golf R including the LED headlights and light strip on the grille:

The 2022 Volkswagen Golf R will have many similarities with the Golf GTI, both inside and out, as supported by spy shots of a non-camouflaged pre-production model being tested on the roads of Germany recently.

Of course, look for a slightly different design for the front grille and lower air intakes, exclusive alloy wheels and a unique rear bumper incorporating a large diffuser along with quad tailpipes. A more aggressive rear spoiler will also be part of the mix.

Under the hood, the 2022 Golf R is expected to deliver easily more than 300 horsepower thanks to a new and improved version of its turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine. It will be mated to a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel drive system. The return of the six-speed manual gearbox is a big question.

We’ll have our answers in less than three weeks. Stay tuned!
