Volvo XC40 Recharge Pricing Announced for Canada
The all-new Volvo XC40 Recharge, the fully electric variant of the small XC40 crossover, will go on sale in Canada later this fall as a 2021 model. And we finally know how much it costs.
Pricing starts at $64,950 plus freight and delivery. If you do the math, that represents a monumental increase of $25,000 versus the conventional, gas-powered model. And of course, the XC40 Recharge is too expensive to qualify for a $5,000 rebate from the federal government.

So, what will customers get for that kind of money? Well, Volvo’s electric SUV offers standard all-wheel drive courtesy of two electric motors (one for each axle) and 335 kilometres of range from a 78-kWh battery as calculated by Natural Resources Canada.
Combined output is rated at 402 horsepower and 486 pound-feet of instantly available torque, offsetting the XC40 Recharge’s extra weight (around 500 kilograms) under acceleration.
In about 40 minutes, the battery can be charged to approximately 80 percent of its capacity on a 150-kW DC fast charger. Volvo also supplies a charging cable for plugging into a 240V or 120V power outlet, although charging times are not specified here.
Speaking of which, Volvo Canada has teamed up with the ChargePoint network, which boasts numerous locations across the country and in the U.S., while also securing partnerships with EVgo, FLO, Greenlots and more. You can easily find an available charging station via the mobile app. What’s more, XC40 Recharge customers will have the opportunity to purchase the top-rated ChargePoint Home Flex home charger at the time of purchase.
Standard content includes 19-inch alloy wheels, a host of safety and driver assistance features, a panoramic sunroof, an Android-powered, nine-inch infotainment display, a 12.3-inch digital information centre behind the steering wheel, plus automatic climate control with CleanZone technology.
Optionally, the XC40 Recharge offers a Climate Package ($1,000) with heated windshield-wiper blades, heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel. The Advanced Package ($2,100) includes high-pressure headlight washers, Pilot Assist driver assistance system with Adaptive Cruise Control, 360-degree Surround View Camera, 12-volt power outlet in the luggage area and wireless smartphone charging. The 20-inch Black Diamond Cut wheels ($1,000) and metallic paint ($900) are magnificent, for sure, but you should not miss the heat pump ($450), which optimizes the vehicle’s thermal efficiency and extends battery range.
What are some of the alternatives to the 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge? They’re all pricier but also provide longer range, including the Tesla Model Y ($69,990, 525 km), Jaguar I-PACE ($89,800, 386 km) and Audi e-tron ($85,600, 357 km).
