The New GMC Hummer EV Could Have Looked Way More Extreme

Published on October 23, 2020 in News by Guillaume Rivard

Imagine you’re a car designer working for GMC and the bosses ask you to draw what the all-new, all-electric Hummer could look like. Talk about an exciting challenge!

The team that received the order back in April 2019 quickly went to work, especially since General Motors initially planned a reveal in March of this year. Due to the pandemic, the event was postponed to October 20, as you know.

The reactions from fans, the media and the general public started flying immediately after. For sure, the look of this new pickup is much more accomplished and less polarizing than that of the Tesla Cybertruck introduced nearly a year ago, but things could have been much different.

Consider these sketches and renderings designers of the 2022 GMC Hummer EV came up with in the early stages of development. Posted on the official Instagram account of General Motors Design, they’re proof that inspiration and imagination were not lacking one bit.

Some are remotely linked to the iconic AM General Humvee, many feature a futuristic take on Hummer’s seven-slot grille, and all of them show fairly similar proportions—a low and wide body, short bed, high-riding stance, oversized tires and more. None have retained the circular headlights of the old Hummer H2 and H3, however.

Next to these extreme concepts and drawings, the actual 2022 GMC Hummer EV looks much tamer and more normal, don’t you think?

Interestingly, the automaker says it still hasn’t built a fully operational prototype of its electric pickup, which is scheduled to enter production for the U.S. market next fall—and for Canada a year later. Just by seeing the pictures and learning about the crazy features and specs, customers reserved all available copies of the limited “Edition 1” model in just an hour with a $100 deposit apiece.

By the way, pricing in the U.S. ranges from $79,995-$112,995, which is double what Tesla is asking for the Cybertruck. More announcements specific to the Canadian market will be made at a later date.
