2022 Ford E-Transit Brings Electrification to Commercial Vans

Published on November 12, 2020 in News by Marc-André Gauthier

Ford today introduced the all-new 2022 E-Transit, a fully electric variant of the Transit van. It might be a commercial vehicle first and foremost, but trust us, this is one of the most important reveals of 2020.

Why? Just think about all that CO2 emitted by delivery trucks and vans that burn millions of gallons of fuel every year doing countless commutes around town.

Gas-free Delivery

The Ford E-Transit is a battery-powered midsize cargo van with a range of more than 200 kilometres. Not impressed? Remember, we’re talking about a commercial vehicle, not a passenger car designed for long-distance travel. The company says it collected insight from nearly 50 million kilometres of customer telematics data to deliver the right amount of range based on fleet needs.

On a 115-plus-kilowatt DC fast charger, E-Transit cargo van low-roof models can achieve approximately 50 kilometres of range in 10 minutes and approximately 75 kilometres of range in 15 minutes. The battery has a capacity of 67 kWh—about the same as a Chevrolet Bolt EV or Hyundai Kona Electric.

Ford is targeting a maximum payload of 3,800 pounds (up to 4,290 pounds for cutaway versions) with a powerful electric motor delivering an estimated 198 kilowatts (266 horsepower) and 317 pound-feet of torque across all configurations. The drive promises to be dynamic even with plenty of cargo and gear in the back.

The 2022 Ford E-Transit also brings SYNC 4 communications and entertainment technology to commercial vehicles, featuring a standard 12-inch touchscreen that’s easy to use, plus enhanced voice recognition and cloud-enhanced navigation. The exact same system can be found in the all-new 2021 Bronco and Mustang Mach-E.

The difference is that E-Transit users and fleet operators will be able to collect a ton of data to manage efficiency (with the standard 4G LTE modem activated).

Several Ford Co-Pilot360 safety and driver assistance features are included as standard or optionally, like available Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control with Speed Sign Recognition and Intelligent Speed Assist, which together identify speed limits and automatically change the vehicle speed accordingly.

Another cool addition is the optional Pro Power Onboard, which provides up to 2.4 kilowatts of power for customers to transform the vehicle into a mobile generator that powers tools and equipment on job sites and on the go—exactly like the new 2021 F-150.

The 2022 Ford E-Transit will hit the market by the end of next year starting at $57,925 in Canada. It’s also backed by an 8-year/160,000-kilometre electric vehicle component warranty, something that entrepreneurs and businesses looking to cut their maintenance and operating costs will also appreciate.
