Here’s When the GMC Hummer EV SUV Will Debut

Published on March 9, 2021 in Electric by Guillaume Rivard

We initially thought it would debut in January or maybe appear in a Super Bowl commercial last month, but as it turns out General Motors will reveal the SUV variant of the 2022 GMC Hummer EV on April 3.

The event will take place at 5 p.m. Eastern time during the NCAA Final Four men's basketball tournament. Reservations will open at the same time.

General Motors is expected to start building the SUV at Factory Zero in Detroit in early 2023, more than a year after the pickup for the U.S. market and a few months after the first Canadian-bound units.

While the automaker has not confirmed production details yet, AutoForecast Solutions predicts an annual volume target of 50,000 vehicles. This may seem like a whole lot for a luxury electric vehicle that will cost a pretty penny, but strong demand for the pickup so far suggests that it’s not far-fetched.

The SUV will likely share many features and capabilities with the pickup, such as removable roof panels, 35- or 37-inch tires, adaptive air suspension, UltraVision surround-view system, Crab Walk mode enabling diagonal manoeuvres at low speeds, and Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving technology.

It will of course utilize the automaker’s advanced new Ultium battery technology, which in the pickup’s case promises a range of more than 560 kilometres. Three separate electric motors combine to generate an estimated 1,000 horsepower and 11,500 pounds-feet of torque, allowing 0-100 km/h performance in approximately three seconds. Will less powerful variants be available? We’ll find out on April 3.
