Over 20 Makes Affected by Continental-made Tires That May Explode

Continental Tire has issued a recall covering approximately 100,000 Continental, General and Barum tires in North America due to a manufacturing defect that could cause a blowout.

Nearly two dozen vehicle brands are affected including Acura, Audi, BMW, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, Fiat, GMC, Honda, Jeep, Lexus, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Infiniti, Ram, Subaru, Toyota and Volkswagen.

In Canada, the list includes the following models (with the number of affected units):

It’s possible this list will expand in the next few weeks to include more models.

The problem is simple. Some of the tires on these vehicles may have been cured for too long. As a result, the sidewall could crack or the tread and belts could separate, thus compromising handling and increasing the risk of a crash.

Continental says it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this recall.
Affected owners will be notified by mail. They will need to visit their dealer to inspect and replace the tires, if necessary. Those who have purchased potentional faulty replacement tires made by Continental will receive a notice, as well.

By the way, if one of your tires blows out while you’re driving, don’t immediately hit the brakes and pull over to the shoulder. Rather, you should hold the steering wheel firmly, ease off the throttle and brake gently before pulling over where it’s safe.
