Volkswagen to Become Voltswagen, But Not Quite [Updated]
After posting an official statement confirming this name change, Volkswagen (or Voltswagen?) Even changed its Twitter handle.
We know, 66 is an unusual age to change your name, but we’ve always been young at heart. Introducing Voltswagen. Similar to Volkswagen, but with a renewed focus on electric driving. Starting with our all-new, all-electric SUV the ID.4 - available today. #Voltswagen #ID4 pic.twitter.com/pKQKlZDCQ7

However, according to the Wall Street Journal, this is pretty much a hoax connected to a marketing campaign surrounding the upcoming ID.4 launch.
The problem is that this “official statement” from Volkswagen has created a lot of confusion. So much so that the brand's marketing strategists are now being singled out and questions are being raised about the company's intentions to meddle with its stock price. “We had no intention of deceiving anyone. It was all just a marketing ploy to get people to talk about the ID.4," a Volkswagen spokesperson in Wolfsburg, Germany told The Wall Street Journal.
The German automaker is preparing a big push towards electrification, with the arrival of several 100% electric models scheduled to launch gradually over the next few years. The first to step on Canadian soil will be the ID.4.
We also recently confirmed the arrival of the ID.Buzz planned for 2023, which is largely inspired by the legendary Microbus. The Car Guide has contacted Volkswagen Canada to see if this name change will apply to us up here in Canada as well, but we are still awaiting a response.
