Mercedes-Benz EQB Unveiled in China, to be Sold in North America

Published on April 19, 2021 in Shanghai by Guillaume Rivard

Mercedes-Benz is introducing another member of its EQ line of electric vehicles. Just a few days after the virtual world premiere of the EQS full-size sedan, the automaker unveiled the all-new EQB compact SUV at Auto Shanghai 2021.

And the good news for us is that it will not be exclusive to China and Europe. A North American launch is planned for 2022, as well.

Like an Electric GLB

The new Mercedes-Benz EQB is basically an electric variant of the existing, gas-powered GLB. The shape and size are similar (the wheelbase is actually identical at 2,829 millimetres long), while the interior can accommodate up to seven passengers. Maximum cargo space is said to be 1,710 litres, or about 100 litres less than in the GLB.

The exterior embodies the same “Progressive Luxury” design philosophy that defines EQ models from Mercedes-Benz. It features the typical black panel grille with central star, plus a continuous light strip at front and rear. The wheels are exclusive to this model.

Inside, the layout looks very familiar, with the dual-screen MBUX infotainemnt system taking centre stage. Of course, the information displayed is specific to the EQB. A number of advanced driver assistance features are also part of the package.

Several Versions

Globally, the Mercedes-Benz EQB range will include several versions with front-wheel and all-wheel drive, various power ratings—some of which will exceed 200 kW (268 hp)—and batteries with usable capacities starting from 66.5 kWh.

The EQB 350 4MATIC reportedly enables 419 kilometres of zero-emission driving based on Europe’s WLTP standard. Expect much shorter distances using typical North American testing cycles. That’s disappointing. Mercedes-Benz said “a particularly long-range version is also planned.”

An 11-kW charger is included in the EQB, although the company doesn’t specify charging times with 120V and 240V power sources. As for fast charging (maximum 100 kW), it takes just over 30 minutes to go from 10-80 percent state of charge.

Coming Here Next Year

The Mercedes-Benz EQB will enter production at two assembly plants located in China and Hungary. It will then go on sale in China and Europe later this year, followed by North America sometime in 2022. Details specific to the Canadian market will be announced at a later date.

In case you forgot, the brand’s other compact electric SUV, the EQC, will not be offered in Canada or the U.S. after all. Does the EQB stand a better chance of succeeding? We’re curious to find out.

And what about the EQA subcompact crossover? This one has yet to be confirmed for Canada.
