Porsche Platforms May Underpin Future VWs

Published on October 28, 2009 in News by Dan Fritter

With news that Porsche will soon be a branch of the Volkswagen Auto Group, the automotive world is abuzz with rumours and speculation as to how the iconic sports car manufacturer will integrate itself within the vast VW empire. With most speculation hovering around the manner in which VW, Audi, Lamborghini and Porsche will align their various models to minimize overlap, Porsche’s CEO, Michael Macht, has come out and stated that Porsche will be a “strong pillar of VW.”

Continuing, Macht didn’t refute the possibility of sharing the platforms of the Boxster, Cayman and 911 with VW, but did say that “engine development is a core value for Porsche;” strongly hinting that VW products, be them Porsche-based or not, will not be Porsche powered.

Whilst it sounds preposterous to envision a 911-based Volkswagen, would it be so hard to imagine an air-cooled, rear-engined coupe, possibly named Beetle?
